William Ouchi has been receiving recognition from his students for excellence in teaching from the time of his appointment to management in 1979. He has been instrumental in creating three programs to develop leaders in minority communities – faculty at historically black colleges and universities, Asian-Pacific business leaders and minority students in business careers.

He has taught large core M.B.A. courses in the full time program, the executive program and small doctoral seminars. Professor Ouchi stimulates dialogue between teacher and student through his ability to capture the essence of complex issues.

Motivation of students is fundamental to successful teaching and in this area, as in the others, William Ouchi excels for several reasons. First, his enthusiasm for his subject is infectious. Second, the rich content of Ouchi’s classes and the students’ respect for his expertise motivates them because they are convinced he has something important to say. Third, Ouchi respects his students and their views and lets them know that he learns from them. Finally, he challenges his students to give their best.

One student commented on Ouchi’s breadth and depth of knowledge, his ability to articulate, to provoke thought and to making a lasting impression. His attention to student involvement in class demonstrations is another great element of his effectiveness.
