Carin Davis ’95

The search for a “how-to guide” to real life is over— thanks to Carin Davis ’95 and her book Life, Love, Lox: Real-World Advice for the Modern Jewish Girl. Both humorous and informative, this essential handbook invites observant and hip Jewish women alike to learn how to enjoy their modern lifestyle while still embracing their personal customs and traditions.
Davis knows her topic. In the section “Diving into JDate,” for example, she draws on her own experiences with the popular online dating service for Jewish singles. From advice on dating to cooking kosher recipes, Davis addresses everything a fashionable yenta needs to know in order to be well versed in Jewish tradition and urbane culture.
Writing the book was both enjoyable and challenging, says Davis. “I work full-time as an entertainment exec, so I wrote the book at night and on weekends. It took about a year and several hundred sugar-free vanilla lattes to finish it.”
Davis says she always has had a passion for writing. As vice president of Film Roman (the animation company behind The Simpsons), Davis works closely with writers on television and film projects. However, it was her experience as a UCLA student that encouraged her to pursue writing and to enroll in a magazine writing course through UCLA Extension.
“The teacher said that as unpublished writers we should approach local publications where our life experience would bring something to the table.” Davis says. “I was sassy, single and searching for my mensch in shining armor.”
She submitted her work to The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, which led to the publication of her first singles column.
Davis says readers enjoyed reading about her experiences that were comical, yet relevant to their own lives as Jewish people. The purpose behind Life, Love, Lox, Davis explains, was to write “something that would have modern Jewish women laughing while learning.”
Her advice to other Bruins interesting in writing is simple. “Start typing.”
