Randy Gee '56
Randy Gee '56, half of a Bruin couple who met on campus in the 1950s and were married for almost 60 years, passed away Sept. 7 at the age of 90. His wife, Karolynne '56, reminisced about meeting her husband at a very different north campus and what UCLA meant to both of them.
Randy had returned to UCLA as a Korean vet in 1954, and graduated in 1956 in accounting. We graduated in the same year even though he was 5 years older — he had a good excuse!
We met on north campus at a coffee wagon that used to park near what was once the Dickson Art Center in an area known back then as "sophomore grove," actually an open space with trees. Back then, UCLA was largely a commuter university — I think Randy had a beat-up green Ford that he drove from South L.A. to campus and parked there, FREE! That area eventually was developed and changed over the years to what we have now on north campus — all good.
Long story short, UCLA is dear to me in many ways: we initiated a long-term relationship in 1955 that culminated in an even longer and cherished marriage of close to six decades some five years later. We Bruins know how to stick together!
