Antonio Villaraigosa ’77
Public service is a phrase that Antonio Villaraigosa takes to heart. Currently Speaker Emeritus of the California State Assembly, Villaraigosa has devoted his political career to empowering each member of the community.
Throughout his years in politics, he has become known for being a passionate advocate for putting people first. As representative of the 45th District, he translates policy into practice every day to respond to his constituents' concerns for such issues as better education, access to health care, more affordable housing, a cleaner environment, economic development and safer communities. During his tenure, he has created the “Healthy Families” health insurance program for children of the working poor, formulated the $9.2 billion statewide school facilities bond measure and most recently co-authored Proposition 12, the largest parks and recreation bond measure in U.S. history.
Villaraigosa still finds time to be active in numerous community groups, despite his demanding professional schedule. His own personal commitment to the issues that concern his constituents is evident through his involvement in Big Brothers of Los Angeles, Boyle Heights College Institute, Salesian Boys and Girls Club and the American Civil Liberties Union.
