Carole Stevens ’56, M.J. ’71

Excellence and Carole Stevens are synonymous in the minds of the many civil leaders and policymakers she has known during her years of dedicated community work. As chair of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Stevens has succeeded in saving thousands of vulnerable wooded acres from haphazard development. She also gave of her creative energies to expand a conservancy program that brings inner-city children, the elderly and people with disabilities to parks in the Santa Monica Mountains.

In addition, Stevens served for two years as the City of Los Angeles Citizen Representative on the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, shaping the transportation policies that will lead Los Angeles into the 21st century.

Stevens was a staff writer with Los Angeles magazine, and later, pursued a successful career in freelance writing. She wrote the book that goes with the film Scared Straight, which won an Academy Award and six Emmys. Stevens is currently employed as a consultant with Resource Integration Systems, a private company that advises cities on how to best reduce solid waste.

She has served on the Alumni Association’s Governmental Relations Steering Committee, as well as the Law and Legislation Executive Committee of the Jewish Federation Council.

Carole Stevens’ impressive record of service and hard work reflects the ideals that the Community Service Award seeks to recognize.
