Catherine “Kate” Stern ’32
Kate Stern has volunteered a lifetime of service in loving pursuit of a single goal: the continuing development of human understanding and cultural pride in a caring, unified community. Her compassion and positive energy are admired by prominent local, state and national leaders. Stern has served twice as commissioner of the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, from 1959 to 1970 and from, 1978 to the present.
Her work honors and supports the ethnic diversity of peoples in Los Angeles County. Stern chaired a task force to generate a sensitive awareness of American Indian culture by law enforcement officials. Championing the ideal of fair housing, she chaired the project titled, aptly and memorable, “Good Neighbors Come in All Colors.” She meritoriously served with the American Red Cross, the Community Relations Conference of Southern California and the Los Angeles Social Services Commission.
Stern received her bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA. A dynamic and poised speaker, she has frequently appeared on telecasts to discuss issues of civic concern. The City of Los Angeles has recognized her efforts by twice presenting the Certificate of Appreciation: in 1984, for outstanding accomplishments of benefit to the city; and in 1971, for assistance in preparing the Wilshire District Plan.
