Chandler Harris ’36
In his half-century association with UCLA, Chandler Harris has been involved in UCLA in more ways than almost any other individual on campus. He was editor of the Daily Bruin as a student and joined the UCLA family permanently in 1939 as a writer for the University Explorer and Science Editor radio programs. He eventually became manager, then director of the Office of Public Information, in charge of all UCLA media relations, until his retirement in 1982.
Chandler’s characteristic unflappability and courtesy on the job earned him the profound respect of his colleagues. Through the years, he served on countless committees for homecoming, reunions and scores of other special events. He saw the coming and going of nearly every fad or trend possible on the campus. At the same time, he witnessed the emergence of UCLA as a major world university.
His ties to UCLA remain unbroken in retirement. He served as editorial consultant for the book just published on Royce Hall and he and his wife Barbara continue their long-standing involvement with UCLA support groups. He currently serves as a UCLA Visitors Center docent, president of the UC Retirees’ Association of Los Angeles and the Class of 1936, and vice president of the American Youth Symphony.
