Charles Berst
It would be difficult to find a member of the UCLA faculty who has given more of his time, energy and wisdom to University leadership than Charles A. Best. An English professor since 1967, he has put in countless hours of inspired service on committees and task forces, demonstrating an uncommon insight into organizational structure.
During his 1988-89 term as chair of UCLA’s powerful Academic Senate, Berst launched a major Senate reorganization, instituting changes that will affect University life in a positive way for years to come.
A member of the Academic Senate since 1970, he was named in 1976 to head the Senate Committee on Privilege and Tenure. Undertaking a review of personnel procedures, the committee vastly improved the way departments vote on candidates for advancement. These changes continue to have a profoundly beneficial impact on the composition of the UCLA faculty.
Berst has also served with the Council on Diversity and the Community Affairs Council, as well as committees focused on students and curricular issues.
Berst’s superb University leadership is equaled by his brilliance as a scholar and teacher. He received the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1987.
Whether chairing a committee, writing a scholarly treatise, or conducting a class, Charles Berst brings diligence and imagination to his work. He serves as a model for all faculty who would aspire to heights of leadership and accomplishment.
