Cindy Miscikowski ’70

Cindy Miscikowski has been a dedicated public servant for more than 30 years, serving as a deputy to former Los Angeles City Councilmember Marvin Braude for 22 years before representing the city’s 11th district, 1997-2005. Recognized both locally and nationally as an authority on city planning, her contributions to Los Angeles include revitalizing and updating the city’s land-use policies.
During her time as deputy, Miscikowski authored two pioneering initiatives approved by voters. Proposition U (1986) cut in half the permitted density of most Los Angeles commercial zones, and Proposition O (1988) banned oil exploration or drilling on the city’s beaches. These two initiatives represented the most fundamental change in land-use policy ever submitted to Los Angeles voters, effectively changing the course of environmental policy in the city ever since. Miscikowski also played an important role in acquiring park land in the Santa Monica Mountains for the use of future generations, reflecting her commitment to preserving open space and innovating urban design standards.
As a two-term councilmember, Miscikowski sat on the Planning Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee and chaired the Public Safety Committee, overseeing the activities of city police and fire departments. She is known as an advocate for citizen participation in government, working to provide her constituents with the research and tools necessary to improve their communities. As a devoted community member, she actively gives her time to a number of service organizations, including the Women’s Political Committee and the National Organization for Women’s Legal Defense and Education Fund.
The American Planning Association recognized her planning expertise with the 2001 Distinguished Leadership Award for an Elected Official, and the American Association of University Women also honored her achievements with its Status of Women Award. In addition to her numerous achievements and political victories, Miscikowski is highly regarded for her intelligence, integrity and her ability to empower others.
“Cindy is unquestionably devoted to ensuring the well-being of all Los Angeles citizens,” explains Flora Gil Krisiloff ’74, M.N. ’78, M.B.A. ’83. “Her genuine interest in every citizen she comes in contact with is extraordinary.”
