Darryl Johnson ’70

Darryl Johnson is the recipient of the 2016 University Service Award. A role model and deeply committed alumnus, Johnson’s contributions through campaigns, volunteer engagement and service leadership to UCLA is worthy of the university’s gratitude.

Johnson’s touch points in the university are diverse. He currently contributes as a member of the UCLA Centennial Campaign Cabinet, his second UCLA wide campaign, as well as a member of the Centennial Campaign for the School of Nursing. A Bruin twice over with a B.A. in psychology and a certificate from the Anderson Executive Program, Johnson also serves as a director emeritus of the UCLA Foundation and on the Board of Visitors of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Bruin Caucus Council.

His service can be symbolized by his membership on the Order of the Blue Shield Board of Directors, a group whose members are dedicated “to further UCLA’s interest and to guard the institution’s welfare.”

Johnson has years of Bruin service behind him as a former member of the UCLA Fund Executive Committee, chair emeritus of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and former member of the West Los Angeles Volunteer Committee. Additionally, he served twice on the Athletic Hall of Fame committee and was a past chair of the South Bay Volunteer Committee.

When not donating his time to UCLA, Johnson was the past chair and director of Kinecta Federal Credit Union and chair of Kinecta Alternative Financial Solutions, Inc. He has been a member of the Board of Directors at Kinecta since 2003.

Johnson also is a retired military colonel and served in the special forces. At UCLA he was a commander in the Bruin Brigade.

His devotion and dedication to UCLA is inspiring to both students and alumni alike. He brings a passion for UCLA to all he does – and never stops believing that his alma mater can build a legacy that makes his community and world a better place.
