Edmund Edelman ’54, LL.B. ’58
Throughout his long public service, Los Angeles County Supervisor Edmund Edelman has exhibited a concern for fair and equal treatment of all people. After graduating from UCLA’s law school, he clerked for a U.S. district judge, did a brief stint as a private attorney and became involved in politics as a legislative counsel in both Sacramento and Washington. He served three terms in the Los Angeles City Council and was elected County Supervisor in 1974. Highlights of his extraordinary career include the initiation of L.A. County task forces on the homeless and AIDS, the Community Youth Gang Services project, Children’s Services Department, County Department of Consumer Affairs, commissions on women and the handicapped and an Office of Affirmative Action. He has worked for governmental reform efforts in both city and county, low-income housing for senior citizens and public and mental health programs to meet current needs. Soft-spoken and articulate, he is a public official with the temperament of a philosopher but with a penchant for holding steadfast.
