Edward Sanders ’43
Edward Sanders truly exemplifies the ideal community leader, selflessly devoting a lifetime of service, energy, and resources to causes in which he fervently believes.
After more than a quarter of a century as senior partner with the law firm of Irell & Manella, Sanders served for two years as senior advisor on Middle East Affairs to President Carter and the U.S. Secretary of State. In 1980, he established his own successful law firm of Sanders, Barnet, Goldsmith & Jacobson. A long-time supporter of UCLA, he is a member of the Chancellor’s Associates.
Sanders rose to prominence throughout the United States and Israel for his leadership to the American Jewish community in several posts, including president of the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles and chairman of the United Jewish Welfare Fund/Israel Emergency Fund. He was also chair of the Los Angeles Urban League.
In 1974, Mr. Sanders was chosen as the first recipient of the prestigious Aleph-Tav Award of Tel Aviv University, for which he was cited as a “proven exemplar of integrity, vision, and compassion.” In recognition of his being the first recipient of the United Jewish Fund’s Maimonides Torch of Justice, Major Tom Bradley proclaimed “Edward Sanders Day” on April 30, 1985.
