Holly Rachel Paul J.D. ’91
Holly Paul has posted an exceptional academic record at the School of Law, emerging fourth in her class of 337 students. She undertook a particularly rigorous course, studying with some of the most challenging professors, and won the admiration of all of them.
Paul was one of just 12 students elected distinguished advocate for participation in UCLA’s Moot Court, a non-credit program that enables students to develop advocacy skills by arguing appellate cases. So superb was Holly’s performance that she was chosen to represent UCLA at the statewide moot court competition.
Paul’s record stands on its own, but her accomplishments are all the more impressive because she is blind. At the age of 25, Paul lost her eyesight due to complications from diabetes, but she has not allowed her disability to keep her from her goals. She quickly mastered modern computer and audio technology for blind students and worked practically around the clock for three years to complete law school on schedule. She did this in spite of having to take time out for several surgeries.
Active in community leadership for years, Paul has redirected her volunteer activities to assist those who are blind or who have health problems similar to hers. Physicians often refer patients to Paul, who willingly provides emotional support.
Paul recently earned a prestigious clerkship with a Ninth Circuit judge, U.S. Court of Appeals and will begin service in the fall.
Hard-working and resourceful, Paul Paul has astonished all who know her. She has pursued her legal education with a single-mindedness that is truly inspiring. Against overwhelming odds, she has found within herself the strength to fulfill her potential.
