Ibrahim Karawan earned his Ph.D. in political science this year, lauded by his teachers for intellectual integrity and precision of thought. The late Dr. Malcolm Kerr identified Karawan as a leading specialist in political matters of the Middle East.

In close association with UCLA’s Gustave von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies, Karawan has attended and addressed international scholarly conferences. He has published numerous articles on comparative and international government affairs; his essay, “The Politics of the North Eastern Triangle,” will be included in a forthcoming journal on the foreign relations of African states.

Sensitive to the intricacies of University programs and activities, Karawan has served student needs through memberships on the Advisory Committee to the Dean of the Office of International Students and Scholars, the Campus Programs Committee and the Student Fee Advisory Committee.

Karawan’s performance as a teaching assistant in comparative government received the highest praise from UCLA professors. Students in his sections proposed formal recognition of his excellent teaching ability. The application of his classroom talents continues: he will join the faculty of Pomona College as a lecturer in government and political science.
