Jared Seltzer ’02

Jared Seltzer has made outstanding contributions to his fellow students, staff, and faculty during his years at UCLA. In his junior year he was elected Campus Events commissioner and re-elected his senior year. During his tenure, Jared programmed concerts, films, and speakers with a budget of $160,000 and a staff of 50 students. Jared also served on the board of directors of ASUCLA, an $80 million enterprise that operates the student store, the student union, and most of the restaurants on campus.

His film and television major is one of the most competitive and selective majors at UCLA, but he always sought out challenging interdisciplinary courses in addition to those that required him to write, shoot, and edit film projects, and Seltzer will graduate with a 3.7 GPA. In addition to personal projects, he helped to develop a new UCLA news show broadcast to all University of California campuses. Filmmaking is an intensively collaborative medium requiring diplomacy and communication, often under pressure, but Seltzer was able to balance his personal vision to get the most from the collaborative process.

Last summer Seltzer volunteered for Americorp, utilizing his ability to work with people of differing sociopolitical views, cultural backgrounds, genders and age groups. He spends his free time discussing astronomy, politics, or art with anyone who will listen.
