John E. Anderson ’40

John E. Anderson is the founder and owner of Topa Equities, Ltd., the co-founder of Topa Management Corporation, and the co-founder of Kayne, Anderson & Co., Inc. Along with James Kindel, Jr. ’34, Anderson was one of the co-founders of Kindel & Anderson law firm, with offices located in Los Angeles, Irvine, Woodland Hills, and San Francisco.

Throughout much of his career, Anderson has taught business classes at the UCLA Anderson School and law classes at Loyola Marymount University’s Loyola Law School. He has lectured extensively throughout the United States to many business organizations, including the Young Presidents Organization and the World Business Council. He is a member of the State Bar of California and is a certified public accountant.

Anderson serves as chair of the UCLA Foundation and is a member and past chair of the Board of Visitors of Loyola Law School. He is chair and director of the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA, a trustee of Claremont McKenna College, and a trustee of St. John’s Hospital and Health Center Foundation, Santa Monica, for which he also has served as president.

In 1987, the UCLA Graduate School of Management was renamed the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management in honor of Anderson’s numerous contributions to the school and university. In 1985, he received the Distinguished Service Award of Loyola Law School, where the John E. Anderson Chair of Taxation was established in his name.

Anderson received a B.A. with honors in business administration from UCLA in 1940. In 1942 he received an M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar, and in 1950, a J.D. cum laude from Loyola Law School.
