During her recently completed term as mayor of the City of Monterey Park, Judy May Chu showed extraordinary dedication to the public good, bringing about significant changes for her constituents. Her highly successful “Week of Harmony” promoted and celebrated the ethnic diversity of the city, bringing about greater understanding, and redoubling Monterey Park’s reputation as an All-American City.

As one of the only two Chinese American mayors in the United States, Judy was a strong advocate for her increased services to the young and to the elderly. She founded and now chairs the Asian Youth Center and also chaired the Asian Task Force of the United Way.

Chu continues to work for a better community through her membership in the Monterey Park City Council, having been elected to that body in 1988. She currently serves on the board of the United Way, San Gabriel Valley and has received numerous awards for her civic work.

Judy is a professor of psychology at East Los Angeles College, and also taught courses in Asian American studies at UCLA. She has stayed actively interested in her alma mater as a member of the Asian Pacific Alumni board.

The Public Service Award is a fitting tribute to someone who has served as effectively and wisely as has Judy May Chu. Judy continues to offer her unusual talents to improve the community she loves, and, in so doing, has won the respect and admiration of all who know her.
