Excelling academically in the difficult and demanding science of electrical engineering, June Takemoto was elected to the Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Freshman honor societies. As a Hughes Aircraft Company Bachelor of Science Scholar, she worked at the firm’s Missile Systems Group radar design department on computer simulations of missile performance. She also did summer work at Rockwell International assisting the space shuttle engineers with analysis of structural safety at Jet Propulsion Laboratory working with environmental researchers to determine the levels of ozone and other trace chemicals in the earth’s upper atmosphere. Despite her youth and relative inexperience, she became known for sound judgment and work which was always well organized, accurate, and of high quality.

Takemoto has impressed her professors with her seriousness and willingness to work very hard to master tough subjects, but has also found time to help other students, participating as a volunteer in the Engineering Honor Society’s tutoring service offered to all math and science students. Utilizing her engineering talents to benefit handicapped children, she created a computer program for the “Laserama” booth presented by engineering students at UCLA’s annual Mardi Gras.
