Martin Wachs
For 14 years, Martin Wachs has sustained a level of great teaching at the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, inspiring intellectual curiosity in his students and providing them with a model of ethical professionalism of the highest standards. He cares deeply about his students as whole human beings, offering time and energy to the joys and problems of learning in a manner that manages to be at the same time both personal and thoroughly professional. Wachs succeeds in raising in each student his or her sense of personal responsibility and worth. “His remarkable attentiveness to my special needs and problems made me feel confident in pursuing goals which were unthinkable just a few years ago,” said one student. It enabled me to trust myself to open up to new experiences.” Another declared, “I recall lively discussions in his class, particularly on theory and ethics, and I still find myself rethinking issues raised. Few other courses in my career have made what is often quite an abstract subject so immediate.” Role model, motivator, and friend, Wachs teaches men and women to be ethical professionals by being one of the finest himself.
