Michael Selsted ’74, Ph.D. ’80, M.D. ’85
Michael Selsted received his M.D. his year, with an estimable reputation as a dedicated scientist. Showing a spirited determination for independent biomedical research, he has conducted intensive laboratory investigations during his medical student tenure.
Selsted’s most consequential project has been the purification and characterization of a new class of natural peptide antibiotics existing in mammalian blood cells. Currently examining the potential therapeutic applications of these antimicrobial agents, he supervises and coordinates activities for a sizable staff of technicians and laboratory assistants. His findings have been presented at national conferences and have resulted in publication of his numerous articles and abstracts.
A two-time recipient of the UCLA Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Student Research Award, Selsted has also been twice honored with the Western States Medical Research Committee Award for Meritorious Research. He has consistently participated in the activities of the Collaborative California Universities Mycology Research Unit.
Selsted has accepted an appointment as assistant professor in the UCLA medicine department. Eager to continue researching the molecular aspects of peptide-mediated host defense mechanisms, he will begin residency training in the pathology department of the UCLA School of Medicine.
