Every school needs an “angel,” and the UCLA School of Public Health has one in Raymond Goodman. Over the past 38 years, Goodman has volunteered thousands of hours of his time. He was founding president of the SPH Alumni Association and founding chairman of the Dean’s Council. He joined the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine in 1950, was appointed assistant clinical professor of medicine in 1953 and since that time has taught entirely without salary. He has held seminars, given superb lectures, endowed three annual scholarships for public health students and endowed in perpetuity an annual Distinguished Lectureship in Public Health. He has also been a health care consultant to more than 60 state, national and private agencies and organizations. Perhaps most significant is his promotion of the field of public health to the public. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Goodman practiced medicine for 25 years and did clinical service for medically indigent patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. In 1970, he enrolled in UCLA’s School of Public Health to earn a master’s degree, with the belief that he could do more good for mankind by working toward the betterment of health care. He is a compassionate benefactor without peer, a true treasure to his beloved school and UCLA.
