Richard Gunther ’48
Upon graduation from UCLA summa cum laude with a B.S. in business administration, Richard Stewart Gunther embarked upon a successful career in construction and real estate development. But dedication to community service has been a guiding principle throughout his life. Richard has steadfastly believed that business endeavors must also be coupled with social responsibility. He has been an integral part of countless community organizations, offering his insight, tireless dedication and vision during service on the board of directors of KCET Public Television, KPFK Public Radio, Esalen Institute, California School of Professional Psychology, the Grameen Foundation, and numerous city and county commissions. Richard developed an interest and later an expertise in the field of adult development when, at age 42, he returned to school and earned a master’s degree at USC, with his thesis on “The Male at Mid-Life.” He used this skill to develop several programs, taught on this subject and co-authored “Who Needs Mid-Life at Your Age?” He was a member of the executive committee of Governor Brown’s Council on Wellness and Physical Fitness, and his political advocacy and involvement in politics were rewarded during the 1970s with a covered spot on Richard Nixon’s “enemies list.” Richard has been a pioneer in looking for creative ways to help encourage economic growth in the Gaza Strip, soliciting donations from both the American Jewish community and Arab Americans.
