Robert Bjork
Robert A. Bjork has an uncanny understanding of the motivational and personality factors that affect human learning. Not surprising, since Bjork’s scholarly expertise is in cognitive psychology. But he doesn’t confine his work to the coldly theoretical. He has taken the austere subject matter of human learning and memory and used it to provide his students with practical tools for studying and remembering what they have studied. He also gives workshops on the art of teaching to UCLA teaching assistants as well as those on other campuses.
For several years, Bjork has chaired the cognitive area within the psychology department, developing teaching programs in cognitive psych at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His extraordinary skills as a teacher contributed greatly to the success of these programs.
In addition to the usual formal classes and individual supervision, Bjork conducts a weekly no-credit seminar on human memory and learning which has attained national renown.
Known for his high standards and caring support, Bjork is not merely an outstanding teacher, but one who has given generously of his time and expertise to improve teaching within his department, within the University and within academia at large. His contributions beyond the call of duty make him richly deserving of a Distinguished Teaching Award.
