Robert Graham Beverly
Named “Legislator of the Year” by both the League of California Cities and the California Trial Lawyers, Senator Beverly is known by all who deal with him as a “reasonable man,” one who truly cares about people and issues and listens carefully to both sides.
After attending UCLA and earning a law degree at Loyola University, he became a practicing attorney, entering political life as a councilman and three-term Mayor of Manhattan Beach. He won election to the California Assembly in 1967 and was chosen for the top Assembly minority post of Republican Floor Leader in 1973. Elected to the 29th Senatorial District in 1976, he became an active and conscientious legislator, authoring more than 275 measures, among them the well-known Song-Beverly Act, which served as a model to the nation in the field of consumer protection, and a measure to provide stiffer penalties for residential burglaries. He has consistently supported legislation beneficial to the University of California. Among his chief concerns are such critical issues to the state as long-term financing of education, water policy, and prison construction. Senator Beverly’s brilliant and productive career in public service eminently qualifies him for high honors by UCLA.
