A multitalented man, Superior Court Judge Robert Weil constantly comes to the aid of public causes. His single most important achievement while serving last year as president of the California Judge’s Association was in organizing the judiciary in opposition to Proposition 61. This defeated ballot measure would have slashed salaries of public officials across the board, a danger to which he alerted the University community. A famed arbitrator, Weil earned the reputation as one of the best civil settlement judges in the Superior Court. He is known as a “judge’s judge,” a very scholarly member of the judiciary who is highly effective. He is also renowned for clear, articulate legal case law writing. He was editor of the California Courts Commentary, a member of the editorial board of California Lawyer and former editor of the Daily Bruin. After a 24-year career in private practice, he was appointed to the bench, then elected and re-elected. He has been active in many civic organizations, giving many years of impressive service to the Jewish community.
