Ruthie Flores ’94
A student whose scholastic and active life are indeed integrated, Ruthie Flores will graduate in communication studies with college honors after spending her senior year on UCLA’s Education Abroad Program in Barcelona, Spain. She was selected as a member of Pi Gamma Mu, International Honors Society for social sciences, as well as Golden Key National Honor Society. She was recognized as one of Glamour Magazine’s Top Ten College women and received the League of United Latin American Citizens Scholarship.
Flores is a thoughtful and intuitive researcher whose projects have included use of linguistics and images by magazine advertisers, hate speech and university speech codes restricting free speech and judicial behavior of the Supreme Court Justices. Her most recent research is on the Catalan, Spanish and English languages in the field of movie-dubbing.
Founder and president of Latinos y Latinas in Communication Studies, Flores has worked to recruit more underrepresented studies into the program. As president of Mortar Board Honor Society, she worked to provide personal and monetary incentives for faculty who demonstrate exceptional regard for teaching and student concerns.
As vice president of the John Wooden Board of Governors, Flores was a strong advocate for restoration of the racquetball and volleyball courts. She served as an aerobics and step aerobics instructor and a resident assistant in Hitch Suites.
Flores was twice selected “most distinguished” member if UCLA’s Bruin Belles for her 500 hours of community volunteer service, especially as co-chairperson of the Belles’ Homeless Project and as an honorary member of the Los Angeles Hemophiliac Foundation.
