Scott Waugh
In a student poll published by the Daily Bruin on the best teachers at UCLA, Scott Waugh was the only instructor listed as an outstanding teacher in both lower and upper division courses. Waugh is brilliant, witty, caring, and wise beyond his years, a truly remarkable teacher whose dedication to his calling makes him a model all members of the faculty might wish to emulate. Students describe him as someone who cares deeply about them and his subject matter. His teaching effectiveness derives from mastery of his subject matter, strong powers of interpretation, wholehearted dedication to teaching, and lavish expenditures of time and energy. Some found their encounters with him a transforming experience. “His rapport with students, colorful lectures, and concern for learning compelled me to change my major from biology to history after taking my first class with him,” one student declared. “Anyone can lecture, but it takes a special person to teach.”
