Sheila James Kuehl ’62
During her undergraduate years, Sheila Kuehl wrote, produced and financed a documentary on UniCamp – a portent of things to come.
Currently Managing Director of the Southern California Women’s Law Center and Professor of Law at Loyola University, Kuehl’s voluminous list of involvements illustrates the breadth of her expertise. Among them: Managing Director of the Law Center, President of the Women Lawyer’s Association of Los Angeles, Chair of Legal Services to Battered Women and service to the National Women Abuse Prevention Center.
Sheila Kuehl is a member of the California Judicial Council’s Gender Bias Advisory Committee which delivered its report in 1990. As part of her involvement, she chaired the Subcommittee on Domestic Violence. She serves as Advisory Board chair to Sojourn (a shelter for battered women and their children.)
Among those in the community who have honored Kuehl for her tireless efforts in service to others: Lawyers for Human Rights – Co-President’s Award; Women Lawyer’s Association of Los Angeles – Ernestine Stalhut Award (for dedication to bringing other women fully into the practice of law); Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women- Humanitarian for Outstanding Legal Advocacy.
Sheila Kuehl is a frequent moderator, speaker and panelist at conferences dealing with gender and the law, political and civil rights and family law as well as employment and discrimination.
