Sucheta Mazumdar ’74, M.A. ’77, Ph.D. ’84
Sucheta Mazumdar, who received her Ph.D. in history, has an impressive record as a dedicated scholar. Fluent in four languages, her specialization in Chinese history demanded in intensive study of classical Chinese and Japanese. Graduating from UCLA as a department scholar in history, she was admitted to the graduate program in Asian history as a Chancellor’s Fellow.
Mazumdar’s published material has won wide acclaim. She founded the nation’s first scholarly journal in its field, the South Asia Bulletin – a publication that has been highly praised by prominent academicians. She has been elected to the board of directors for the Association of Asian American Studies.
Scholastic excellence has not diminished Mazumdar’s involvement in her service to the University. She has acted as the academic affairs commissioner for the UCLA Graduate Students Association and has organized campus events to address women’s issues.
The University of California, Berkeley has awarded Mazumdar a Chancellor’s Minority Post-Doctorate Fellowship with the Center for Chinese Studies. This honor will grant her a full-time lectureship.
