Thomas Caramagno, Ph.D. ’83

Thomas Caramagno, who receives his Ph.D. in English this year, has an impressive record of achievement. He was awarded the Bradford Booth/Majl Ewing Fellowship, a $6,000 dissertation fellowship in recognition of scholarly achievement at UCLA. Caramagno received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication arts from Loyola University, where he won their outstanding achievement award for academic and creative excellence. He placed first in a script competition at Loyola and won a second prize screenplay award from Story Magazine. He is the author of two novels, several radio dramas, stories and satires.

Caramagno put together a remarkable collection of 550 slides for use in several courses and recently donated the collection to the folklore and mythology department’s visual archives for campus-wide use. He has been a speaker at the Chancellor’s Conference and a writing consultant with the UCLA Composition Program.

In August, Caramagno will begin full-time employment as an assistant professor teaching 19th and 20th century literature and creative writing in the English department at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.
