Thomas E. Everhart M.S. ’55

Thomas Everhart is an educator, administrator, talented researcher and involved citizen. In 1958 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at U.C. Berkeley. In 1972 he was named chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Berkeley and in 1979 he became dean of the College of Engineering at Cornell University. In 1984 he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since 1987 he has been president of the California Institute of Technology, where he is also a professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics.

Dr. Everhart has served as a guest professor in Germany, Japan and Cambridge, England. His research projects include the scanning electron microscope, electron beam lithography and the erasable electron beam addressable MOS memory, with over 80 published works and five patents.

Among his community commitments, Thomas Everhart serves on the General Motors board of directors and the board of advisors for The Bower Award & Prize for Achievement in Science; as chairman of the Secretary of Energy’s advisory board and vice chairman of the Council of Competitiveness.

Recognized by his peers on numerous occasions, Dr. Everhart has received the Benjamin Garver Lamme Award, honorary Doctor of Law degrees from Illinois, Wesleyan and Pepperdine, honorary Doctor of Engineering from Colorado School of Mines and the Clark Kerr Award from U.C. Berkeley.
