UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives is partnering with UCLA Asian American Studies Center, UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, Asian Pacific Alumni of UCLA and UCLA Pilipino Alumni Association to bring Dr. OiYan Poon to UCLA to speak about her new book, "Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations on Race, Affirmative Action, and Family." This event will be moderated by author Anthony Ocampo, ’06, Ph.D. ’11, and will take place at the James West Alumni Center with a hybrid viewing option available on Zoom.
Inspired by conversations in her own family, Poon’s book combines research with personal narratives and interviews to explore the debate over affirmative action within Asian American communities. Poon is the co-director of the College Admissions Futures Co-Laborative and was a lead co-author of various amicus briefs supporting race-consciousness admissions that were submitted to federal courts, including the Supreme Court in relation to the Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard case.
This event will include a moderated discussion and Q&A. Light refreshments will be provided.
