UC Student Health Insurance | What to Know

Ensuring students maintain their well-being and health is a top priority at UCLA. Learn about the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP) and insurance requirements in this article from Geno Mehalik, Outreach & Programs Manager at UCLA Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center.

What are insurance requirements for UCLA students?

  • All registered students are required to have medical insurance that meets minimum university requirements.
  • To fulfill this requirement, a health fee (UC Student Health Insurance Plan premium) is billed through the campus BruinBill each quarter.
  • Students who are already covered by a health insurance policy that meets university requirements policy may waive (opt out of) UCSHIP by completing the UC SHIP Waiver Process to avoid automatic enrollment.

What is the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP)?

  • The University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP) provides high-quality, affordable, convenient coverage that protects students from unexpected health care costs.
  • UCSHIP covers medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, and mental health and substance use disorder services for UC undergraduate and graduate students and their eligible dependents.
  • A full explanation of benefits for the UCSHIP policy is available under Insurance on The Ashe Center website.

Where can students access services using UCSHIP?

  • All students are assigned a Primary Care Provider (PCP) at The Ashe Center who will oversee their primary care needs while enrolled.
  • To access non-emergent specialty care outside of The Ashe Center, student members must receive an Ashe Center Referral in advance.
  • Referrals are not required for emergency care, urgent care, or for services provided by an obstetrician or gynecologist.
  • For Dental Care through Delta Dental PPO, no referrals are required.
  • For Vision Care through Blue View Vision Insight, no referrals are required.

How can students waive UCSHIP and when are waiver periods?

  • Students who do not want to utilize any benefits of UCSHIP must complete the UCSHIP Waiver Process annually to avoid automatic enrollment.
  • The UCSHIP Waiver Process starts by submitting an online health fee waiver application with supporting documentation such as front and back copies of your insurance card during the waiver period.
  • Once submitted, Academic Health Plans (AHP) will review the application and documents submitted to ensure the health insurance meets university requirements.
  • Students with a health plan that meets requirements will have a waiver credit posted to their BruinBill to negate the health fee charge.
  • The UCSHIP Waiver Process must be completed each academic year to avoid automatic enrollment.
