On Nov. 22, the California selection committee for the Rhodes Trust announced that two Bruins, Scott Hugo ’09 and Christopher Joseph '08, would receive the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest and best-known award for international study.

Scott Hugo finishes his undergraduate studies at UCLA in spring 2009. He is currently completing his degrees in both political science and history.  While a student, he has performed research on U.S.-China relations and various other aspects of East Asian affairs. Upon his return to Oxford, where he studied in 2007, he plans to pursue a master's of philosophy in international relations. In a recent interview, Hugo said that he felt that in order to prepare for a future in politics, he wanted to “truly have an international perspective of world affairs and what role the U.S. has to play.”

UCLA alumni in the San Francisco Bay Area recognized Hugo’s potential early in his UCLA career. Hugo received a Freshman Alumni Scholarship, funded by the Bay Area Bruins.

A native of Alamo, Calif., Hugo has been an active member in a number of organizations around campus. He has been a starter on the UCLA club rugby team since his freshman year, and as a sophomore, he served as team captain. President of Sigma Chi fraternity and one of the top organizers in the Bruins for Obama campaign, he is also a youth group leader in Los Angeles.
