Troy Johnson M.A. ’88, Ph.D. ’93

With a remarkable presence in the classroom, Troy Johnson M.A. ’88, Ph.D. ’93 has had a tremendous impact on his students at California State University, Long Beach. In honor of his exemplary work teaching history and American Indian Studies, Johnson recently was recognized with the Outstanding Professor Award, CSU Long Beach’s highest faculty honor. Awardees are recognized for excellence in instruction, scholarly and creative activities, and professional service.

“I am extremely honored and humbled to have been selected by my peers as a CSULB Outstanding Professor.  This award is really shared by all of those people who have mentored me and encouraged me throughout my career,” said Johnson.

Johnson is currently chair of the anthropology department and serves as director of the American Indian Studies program. The program has seen increased enrollment during his tenure, evidence that his fervor and passion on the subject have had an influence on CSU Long Beach students.

A respected scholar, Johnson has published and edited 16 peer-reviewed books on Native American studies. A nationally recognized expert in the field, he has given more than 40 invited presentations at major universities and conferences. In addition, Johnson seeks to teach children and young adults about Native Americans by publishing two series of books on the subject.

A dedicated member of the CSU Long Beach community, Johnson has served on 18 different university, college and department committees. He chaired the university search committee for the director of equity and diversity and was a special advisor on veteran affairs to university president Robert C. Maxson from 1999-2005. Johnson also served 23 years in the United States Navy, retiring as lieutenant commander.
