ECLIPSE VIEWING

Overview

pin Austin, Boerne, San Antonio

Join UCLA Alumni Travel to view the Great American Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. The weather prospects are excellent in the Texas Hill Country where we will have an exclusive eclipse viewing site to maximize your enjoyment, comfort, and convenience. In the company of UCLA planetary astronomer Professor Jean-Luc Margot, we’ll travel to the path of totality to observe a total eclipse when the bright disk of the Sun becomes entirely hidden behind the Moon, the sky becomes dark, and the Sun’s corona flashes into view. During this brief time of the full eclipse, it becomes safe to look directly at the sun. Bright stars and planets shine forth, and the air temperature drops noticeably. Birds and other animals, thinking dusk has settled, return to their nests and evening shelters. This is one of the most beautiful astronomical events, worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. Witness the collective awe expected across our continent as we experience approximately four minutes of totality when the skies in the direct path of totality plunge into darkness.

Our journey begins in Austin, Texas with a visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin where wildflowers will be in full bloom for an introductory lecture on the eclipse and private catered lunch. We’ll continue to the scenic Hill Country during the height of bluebonnet season when fields along the Texas highways turn a vibrant bluish-purple. Arrive in time for cocktails and a dinner reception at Tapatio Springs Resort located on 220 acres in the Hill Country. Before the eclipse, we’ll visit an authentic Texas ranch for a private rodeo demonstration including a longhorn cattle entrance, barrel racing, and an award-winning drill team. After a barbecue lunch, we’ll tour the highlights of San Antonio including a VIP tour of the Alamo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a chartered cruise along the San Antonio River and its famous Riverwalk.

The next total solar eclipse will not cross the United States until 2044. Make the most of your time in totality by securing your space on this unique tour to witness a spectacular total solar eclipse with fellow UCLA alumni and friends and the expertise of study leader, Professor Jean-Luc Margot.
