Resources for Social Justice
As an alumni community we stand in solidarity with the Black community and all others in the fight against White supremacy, systemic racism and police brutality. UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives aims to uplift alumni voices from historically marginalized communities, specifically our Black community at this time, and has a responsibility to ensure that our alumni community is heard and seen.
Below is a starting point for resources to help alumni navigate the current social justice movement.
To help us heal, to help us learn, and to help us process and take action together, the UCLA Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion has put together this page for the UCLA community. This resource hub will point you to reflection spaces, heartfelt statements from campus leadership, advocacy work, and relevant literature from UCLA and across the web. We realize there are no easy answers here. But we hope this can at least be a starting point — as we all work together towards possible solutions and genuine reform.
#BlackLivesMatter was co-founded in 2013 by UCLA alumna Patrisse Khan-Cullors ’12, featured in UCLA’s Our Stories, Our Impact Centennial initiative, in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, Black Lives Matter is winning immediate improvements in our lives.
We have compiled an extensive, but not exhaustive, list of statements that have been published in solidarity with the Black community and the movement for social justice. You can view the list here, and feel free to let us know of others that can be added by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Diversity Digest is a an e-newsletter produced by UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives that offers UCLA alumni and friends ways to engage with the alumni community through a diverse, social justice lens. You can subscribe to our mailing here. For features and inquiries please contact us at email@example.com.
