Mixin' It Up

Mixin’ It Up programs create welcoming and socially engaging spaces for alumni from diverse backgrounds to ignite new conversations and build relationships with students, campus and community leaders, and fellow UCLA alumni. Hosted in a wide range of spaces throughout California, these events encourage alumni to explore the richness of our city and state while fostering meaningful connections that transcend generations and lines of difference.

Shared Histories, Shared Future — A Bruin Night at the Dunbar, part of UCLA Alumni’s Mixin’ It Up series

On Aug. 20, 2025, UCLA Alumni hosted Shared Histories, Shared Future — A Bruin Night at the Dunbar at Delicious at the Dunbar, a Bruin-owned restaurant inside the historic Dunbar Hotel in South Los Angeles.

The evening brought together alumni, students, staff and community members for storytelling, speakers and shared connections over food and history. Once a haven for Black entertainers, activists and intellectuals during segregation, the Dunbar remains a powerful symbol of resilience, advocacy and radical joy.

Mixin' It Up in Historic Filipinotown

This event took place Aug. 10, 2024, at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) in Los Angeles' Historic Filipinotown. UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs and Initiatives co-sponsored the event with the UCLA Pilipino Alumni Association and SIPA to bring Bruins together in this vibrant neighborhood.

Attendees gathered at SIPA, an organization led by Bruins that provides health and human services, community economic development and arts and culture programming. The event offered an opportunity to expand the Bruin network and learn from alumni diversity network leaders about service through board leadership.

Mixin' It Up: Empowering Communities for a Sustainable Tomorrow

This event took place Oct. 19, 2023, at De Neve Plaza. Sustainability encompasses the intersection of environmental responsibility, social equity and economic viability. From making small changes to daily routines to uplifting historically marginalized communities and addressing long-standing poor environmental practices, sustainability is multifaceted and touches every sphere of life.

Following a facilitated discussion and Q&A with Nisha Bansal, Alumni Diversity Network leaders connected with current students over dinner to reflect on sustainability strategies and explore opportunities to stay engaged.

Mixin' It Up: Building Connections in South L.A.: A Bruin Community Mixer

This event took place Sept. 9, 2023, at South LA Cafe. The goal of this casual mixer was to create a welcoming space for Diversity Network leaders to gather, connect and showcase their communities to those interested in getting involved.

All networks play a vital role in the Bruin community, and this event encouraged attendees from all walks of life to stay connected with UCLA.

UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs and Initiatives Honored with CASE Award

UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs and Initiatives received the 2021-22 Best of CASE District VII Award in the category of Alumni Relations Initiatives (more than 25 staff) for its Mixin’ It Up: Coffee Connections program.
