Lawyering in Movie Production: Lessons in Crisis Management
While movies are being filmed, producers run into a series of unexpected problems which need to be resolved promptly, because time is money. Some of these involve laws or contractual relationships which impact on the work, and an emergency call is made to their production lawyer who then must counsel the client on how to navigate the situation. The lawyer must make very fast decisions, often with no time to check cases which could bear on the matter or even discuss it with colleagues. Marshall Silverman provides us a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes by telling stories from his years of experience working as a production lawyer on numerous feature films about what it was like for him to have to handle such frantic calls from producer clients and solve problems that could have derailed the production of numerous films.
